Trading journal: software or Excel?

Excel can be a useful starting point for a trading journal. Dedicated software becomes interesting when maintaining multiple accounts, recurring imports, screenshots and connected reviews. The deciding factor is your actual workflow.

Where a spreadsheet works well

A spreadsheet makes formulas visible and allows custom columns. For a small, well-maintained sequence, you can calculate costs, win rate and averages yourself. Compare both workflows using the same records. The table on this page contrasts the tasks and maintenance each approach involves.

When maintenance becomes more demanding

Recurring exports, differing account formats and manually linked screenshots add maintenance work. Check whether you copy records repeatedly and whether formulas still include new rows. A software workflow can consolidate these connections, but its actual import paths and limits still need evaluation.

PRAETIR connects the journal, trading days, plan and analytics. Systems and Command are currently offered through Early Access; the website does not yet provide a regular price basis for a reliable cost comparison. Invented savings would not help the decision.

Compare using the same task

Use the same small sequence in both approaches. Check import time, correcting an incorrect date, reconciling fees and attaching a screenshot. Record the actual effort. This compares your tasks rather than making a blanket recommendation for everyone.
